The Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) is one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Brazil. UERJ is a Brazilian public university, and thus does not charge any fees and the student has the opportunity to obtain an advanced academic degree in an University of excellence entirely for free. Furthermore, for students with outstanding academic records, the Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering (PPG-EM) at UERJ also offers the opportunity to apply for scholarships.

There are two PPG-EM admission periods per year, one in the beginning of the year and one in the middle of the year. Master and PhD courses require the enrollment in subjects (mandatory and elective) and the completion of a thesis, which must be defended by the student to a committee of professors in the field. The average duration of a Master course is 2 years and a PhD course is 4 years.
